Family storage: a private space for each person

Buy one plan and share it with the people you choose. Each person gets their own private storage, added to their own account and used in Files like any storage they own. Only they see their files. You see how much each person was given and how much they use, never file names or contents.

One plan, a private space for each person

You buy a plan as usual. With plans of 5 TB or more you can give each person you invite their own storage out of it. What you do not give out stays yours.

  • Each person gets at least 1 TB, in whole terabytes, up to what your plan holds
  • 1 TB of storage comes with 1 TB of monthly bandwidth
  • The storage is added to their own account, and they use it in Files like any storage they own
  • They get the limits of a paid account for files, folders, access keys and sharing

Three steps, and it is in their Files

You do it all on the Plan page, under Share your storage. The people you invite need only a free Filexco account.

  • Choose a plan of 5 TB or more. Plans add up, so you can add storage to a plan you already have
  • Invite a person by e-mail and choose how much storage they get
  • They read what it means and accept
  • The storage is added to their own account at once, ready to use in Files

Private by design: only they see their files

A person's files live in their own account. You see numbers, and the people you invite do not see each other.

  • You see how much storage each person was given and how much they use, never file names or contents
  • People you invite do not see each other's files or e-mail addresses
  • Vaults are encrypted in the person's browser, with post-quantum protection when they share
  • Standard folders, which WebDAV can reach, are encrypted at rest

You stay in control

Change what each person has whenever you like. Your pool shows your plan, what you gave out and what is left to give.

  • Raise or lower a person's storage in whole terabytes, down to what they already use
  • Remove a person at any time. They keep their files in their own account for a grace period
  • Each person gets a short e-mail about every change
  • Give storage to more people while there is room left in your pool

Family storage or team workspace?

Both use your storage plan, and you can have both. They are made for different jobs.

What the owner sees, and what a person keeps

Clear rules for the person who gives and the person who receives.

Private by design: the owner sees only numbers

You see how much each person was given and how much they use. File names and contents stay with the person, and vaults stay encrypted in their browser.

Added to their own account

The storage joins the person's own account, so they use it in Files like any storage they own. They can buy a plan of their own too, and the two add up.

When someone leaves

When a person leaves, or you remove them, their storage returns to your pool and they keep their files in their own account for a grace period. They can download or delete them, or buy their own plan to keep them. If they used more than half of the storage, it stays held in your pool until their files are half of it or less, or the grace period ends.

Questions about family storage

What is family storage, and who is it for?

Family storage lets you share your storage plan with the people you invite. Each person gets their own private storage, added to their own account and used in Files like any storage they own. It suits a family, friends or a small group where everyone needs space of their own. For shared folders and roles, use a team workspace.

Can I see the files of the people I share with?

No. You see how much storage each person was given and how much they use, never file names or contents. Only the person can open their files, and the people you invite do not see each other's files or e-mail addresses. Vaults a person makes are encrypted in their own browser.

What happens when a person leaves or I remove them?

Their storage returns to your pool, and you can give it to someone else. The person keeps their files in their own account for a grace period. They can download or delete them, or buy their own plan to keep them. If they used more than half of the storage, it stays held in your pool until their files are half of it or less, or the grace period ends.

What plan do I need, and how much does each person get?

You need plans that add up to 5 TB or more. You choose how much each person gets, from 1 TB in whole terabytes, up to what your plan holds. Each terabyte of storage comes with a terabyte of monthly bandwidth. What you give out leaves your own storage smaller by the same amount. You can raise or lower a person's storage at any time, down to what they already use.
